WASHINGTON —The federal government is scrambling to find ways to extend access to rare and potentially dangerous finasteride-like medicines, a report from the New York Times said Wednesday.
This week, the government and the FDA will review a study by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research that found the drug could harm women’s breasts and other parts of the body, the report said.
“This is not an isolated case,” Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, the chair of the FDA’s Committee on Inspection and Research, told the Times.
“We are reviewing the study. We’re reviewing the results of the research,” she added. “We will review the results in just a couple of weeks.”
The Times reported that FDA scientists conducted the study in 2010. Their study was called the Finasteride Study on Women’s Health, or FSHR. In 2011, the FDA said it was reviewing the study and the study was still ongoing.
“We’ve been working closely with the FDA to ensure that it is done properly and that we’ve not isolated a case,” said Dr. John P. Glynn, the FDA’s medical director.
The FDA is also reviewing the findings of the FSHR study, which it said has been submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“This is a new analysis of this important drug for women’s health,” said the FDA.
The Times described the FSHR study as a “mechanical study,” including a study of finasteride and a study of a drug marketed as “Propecia.” The drug was also being studied for other uses, including depression, heart disease, and hair loss.
The Times said that the FDA and the federal government are trying to find ways to ensure that patients can safely and responsibly receive the medicines.
“We’re going to make sure that the drug is safe for everyone,” said Dr. David A. Kaplan, the FDA’s medical director.

“It’s a little bit different in the body than you would in the body,” he says. “And some of the things that you’re going to be able to do are to take a little bit of a break. And then you’re going to be able to see a difference in your hair loss.”
Some of the side effects of Propecia include decreased sex drive, headaches, and mood changes, Nissen says. “There are some things that can be done to help with the side effects of Propecia, such as stopping the medication and taking more time than necessary to take the medication,” he says.
“If you’re interested in using Propecia to treat male pattern baldness, there are some things that you can do that will be very helpful to have a good idea of what’s going on in your body,” Nissen says.
In fact, Nissen says that while Propecia is not effective in treating male pattern baldness, it can be quite effective for some people.
